( it isn't that he doesn't hear itadori--he can hear him, sense his breath, the way he's nearby, can feel him move and catch his phone and seem to come to the same realization that he has, only moments later. it isn't that he's not keenly aware that they're currently living on borrowed time, if they're even living at all, and it isn't like he doesn't understand that being in this place any longer than they need to be might mean they both get thrown back into the cells, far in the darkness behind them now. the corridor that they manage to escape into, thanks to only a small amount of critical thinking, is so dark that even the flashlight from their devices feels foggy; the air is thick, and in the distance, there's the faint sound of dripping water.
he isn't the kind of person that should be here with itadori. last time they'd been in a situation like this, they'd been arguing, fighting over morals and lives lost and things that feel almost pointless, now, as they carry on. it had been one of the first times that they had all come together as three, even if kugisaki had just shouted at them, calling them idiots. itadori's quieting means that he's probably remembering the same things; he's probably missing having kugisaki nearby, even if it meant more noise.
so he pushes on for the both of them. itadori is injured, he knows, but he hadn't gotten a good look at it back before their escape--and here, in the gloom, it isn't the time or the place to stop and stall and tend to whatever it is. it'll have to wait until they make it out. )
You hear that, don't you? ( rather than make heartwarming comments or try to lighten the mood, he pushes on with his usual stoicism. ) In the distance.
( how far ahead of them does this place stretch, anyway? it's hard to tell even as he squints into the light of the device, and he can't really feel the shadows here, anyway. they're--different, wrong, mottled with something he can't touch. )
It sounds like... ( a swallow, as he turns his head towards itadori, and then, nods out in front of them: there's the soft slapping sound of wet skin on rock, scrabbling, crawling, skittering, a flickering of blinking light in the distance. ) ... feet.
