INHUMAN COURTESY

I. PUSHING UP DAISIES
cw: depiction of hanahaki, mention of blood, mild body horror

The Frightful Harvest ended on a bloody, eerie note, but the Respite's most welcome interlude has proven exceptionally fruitful. The sky's darkened again, moons struggling to glow through turbulent clouds, but crops all over Stygia have grown dense and healthy, herbs and plants and flowers aplenty. Normally, it'd be a time to rejoice, even as sleet pours and winds grow bitterly cold -- and it might have been, had greens and stems and petals NOT elected to blossom inside you. Your lungs, specifically.

It's an uncommon side effect of the Harvest, affecting those who foster affection or attraction towards another, triggered only by a stray thought. Almost as if punished by Oblivium for harboring any kind of positive feelings. The worst part is that the object of your desire doesn't even have to be in the Netherworld for you to be afflicted. Over the span of three months, you'll gradually experience various degrees of the "harvest's curse", depending on the source of your feelings:

► PHYSICAL/EMOTIONAL ATTRACTION & REQUITED LOVE
It starts with an itch. Your throat tickles, an odd sensation in your lungs, slightly constricted. Allergies? Not quite. It worsens overtime, and days pass by, perhaps weeks. You cough, a little more every day, a little deeper, and then it happens: petals, stuck to your lips as you wheeze and try to empty your chest. Marigold, carnations, daisies, peonies... Thankfully, for you, it's more of an annoyance, sporadic at best and leaving you exhausted at times, but you're in no immediate danger. Unfortunately, not all Restless share the same luck.

► UNREQUITED LOVE
It doesn't matter whether it is truly unrequited; as long as you think it is, whether you're fully convinced or distantly resigned, you get the whole package. It starts the same way the lesser variation does, gradual, and with unsavory (!) additions: lilies and dark red roses. The first slowly spreads its poison in your body, inducing fevers, skin rashes, blistering in your mouth and stomach aches. The second pricks your throat bloody, making speech difficult and breathing even more so. It spreads throughout Stygia, and if most wound up meeting their end in the past, some speak of a highly hypothetical cure. It's believed that if the object of your affection confesses equally strong feelings for you, the curse should rapidly subside. If this option isn't viable, Doran promises that all Healers in Hale are working extremely hard to find a solution. In the meantime, symptoms can be partially soothed with poultices and spells that you can find in the Marketplace or in Serene. Some merchants might even take pity on you and offer them for free.
if your character has heard of similar diseases in their home world, they're absolutely welcome to share their insight on the netherwork or anywhere else
the evolution of the disease can be as gradual, as fast or as severe as you wish it to be
a mini quest to retrieve ingredients for a cure will be available in december or january
by february, all characters should be cured

II. DO NOT PASS GO
cw: mention of blood, torture, branding, violence, forced captivity

Full-swing investigations concerning the Harvest's murders have begun, though the mysterious rider has yet to resurface. The day is young still, but no matter; the Hierarchy firmly believes that the creature was summoned by a group of renegades, fully intent on finding and dismembering the organization. Perhaps even literally.

If you've spilled blood not your own in the previous event, the Hierarchy finds you. Do they know? It doesn't really matter; they've targeted you for reasons they won't divulge, persuaded of your involvement -- and off to the Gallows you go. Each of you receives the same greeting when you arrive, held down by rough hands and branded upon the arm with the letter F. The mark signifies ‘forsaken’, and the painful scar is indelible proof that each of you has betrayed the Hierarchy's hospitality. Writhe and scream and glower as much as you want; next thing you know, something heavy hits you across the head, and you collapse.

When your vision slowly creeps back, your eyes adjust to a dimly lit stone cell. Your feet are secured by iron cuffs tethered by one long chain, and you lie in nothing but filthy, tattered rags. It's dark; the air is bloated and filled with agonizing shrieks. Dead vines scrap the walls of half-crumbled buildings, weather-worn stone pillars surrounded by withered clumps of grass. You may converse with your cellmates: the guards patrolling the Gallows couldn't care less, convinced that no one could possibly escape anyway.

► Ironically, a magical barrier around the Gallows prevents magical/spiritual abilities from functioning. However, characters who roam free still can absolutely sneak in! Be careful not to get caught, though!
► Loud disagreements might attract unwanted attention. A single guard will come, and if he finds nothing else amiss, will threaten them to be quiet. A second violation earns the offender a rap on their bare feet with a club. A third violation will cause the offender to be gagged. Note that in order to beat or gag the offender, the guard must first open the cell.
If you share affinities with Gargoyles, incapacitating a guard in any way will draw the attention of one. It'll show you to the gates where you'll be able to escape, taking care of sentries on your way. You should probably keep a low-profile from then on, and avoid showing-off your brand.
► A secret passage may be found through a mausoleum nearby; an arrow of flaking red paint marks the entrance. Or is it blood? Inside, it's nearly pitch-black. Perhaps, if you're lucky, your vision extends as far as 30 feet in front of you, but occasionally, the darkness is broken by clinging phosphorescent fungi or crawling luminescent creatures, and from out of the silence echo sounds of dripping water. You're underground, and Abysmals can be encountered here if you're too loud. You should also watch out for cave-ins, but as you get farther away from the general region of the Gallows, your magical abilities gradually come back.
► Eventually, a long, broken staircase will lead you to Hale. If you're injured, you'll be sent to the main infirmary; characters with healing abilities or knowledge are super welcome to help!

Luckily for you, there are so many prisoners it's a difficult task for the Hierarchy to always keep track of all of them. Your brand, however, is a dead giveaway, so you might as well try and find a way to get rid of it; you might hear through the grapevines that the dead skin of Badaliscus can be used as bandages, and overtime, the brand will fully heal and disappear.

III. TO THE RESCUE
As you attempt to escape, or perhaps once you’ve successfully snuck in, you come across a terrifying spectacle: in front of you, impaled through the shoulder by a spear, a weary humanoid figure covered in blood. The body is being restrained by additional shackles on each arm and leg, which are linked to chains anchored within the walls. There's a guard nearby, armed to the teeth… and still you decide to free them.

The guard’s magic is just as useless as yours, and while impressive in size, dexterity definitely isn’t his main strength. He hits hard — with brass knuckles, a chain mace, and a sturdy shield — and his stamina almost seems endless, but it’s not. Keep evading, and he’ll eventually tire enough to topple over. It’s also possible to have him chase you around if you don’t go too far, which would allow someone else to grab the spear. Once he’s too exhausted to go on, you can either kill him or chain him to the wall. The keys are in his boots, and you’ll find a bottle of water as well as a small vial of ointment in a satchel on the ground, where he previously stood.

The prisoner is a young man, perhaps in his mid-20s. Once freed from his shackles, he immediately keels over, though he’s not unconscious. He thanks you with a deep and raw voice, begging for water. You can tend to his wounds if you’re able—the ointment quickly soothes—and when he finally stands again, he asks you a question: “I’m a stranger to you, and you could have died. Yet, you chose to free me, unaware of my past. Of my crimes. Of my virtues. Why?”

Regardless of your answer, he smiles, a private understanding that turns the stretch of his lips enigmatic. There’s a bubbling chuckle in his throat, very hoarse, and then he hisses, touching where you’ve helped him apply the ointment on his body. “You know what they say. If it stings...” He looks at you, deliberately pausing there and staring bold into your eyes. “... then it must be working.

It might feel like there’s more to what he’s trying to say, though it’s pointless to ask: he bows, and then he slowly inches away from you. “Until we meet again.” White and thick tendrils of smoke envelop him, seemingly coming out of nowhere, and then just like that, he’s gone.
so you’ve chosen to free him, which in turn has generated a future plot point that’ll occur some time in february. some of you WILL see him again.
what he says to you is a clue.
you can answer his question OOCly right here. it’ll have some bearing on the way your character will be approached re: future plot point.
if you've voted no and would still like to participate, you could always allow your character to be convinced or reluctantly dragged by another!
ooc note

► As always, check out the Notice Board if you'd like additional prompts! Older quests from previous months are always available as well. You'll also find the Calendar right here.
► You'll find already answered questions just here, and if you'd like to ask new ones, ask them here!
► For fun's sake and similarly to the puck adventure, you may play it out in different groups or on your own, and still obtain the same results as everyone else whether your characters threaded together!

FELIX HUGO FRALDARIUS | FIRE EMBLEM: THREE HOUSES

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-10 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
A. TICKLE IN THE THROAT
[it's rare to find Felix somewhere non-hunting or fighting-related, yet here he is, at a cafe in Mirth, knocking back a cup of tea like it's his job. every couple of moments he coughs, frowns, and drinks some more.

maybe he's sick? or maybe you know exactly what's up. in any case, it's a premium opportunity to bother felix, and maybe enjoy a beverage, too. you can probably slip it on to his tab...]

B. THEATRE KID
[somehow or other, Felix has managed to force his way through the missing movies request, and obtained the pseudo-USB stick. maybe you were with him. likely you found it. but it's Felix who plugs it into his phone, with no knowledge to fear what viruses await him.

when a movie starts from an exploration of files, he frowns.]

Is someone trying to contact me? Hello?

[he just assumes it's a video call. are you really gonna be the one to explain arthouse cinema or just movies fullstop to Felix Fire Emblem.]

C. HAND TO FIN COMBAT
[on the shore, a pair of thigh-high boots.

a little distance out in the surf, in about knee-depth ocean, their owner, pants hitched up to just above the watermark. he seems to be sprinkling something into the water in front of him, watching it pointedly, standing stock still with his a sword in one hand, hovering over the water.

then, in a quick moment, he stabs the water with the blade, hauls it up...

a fish.

he plucks it off, and throws it in a woven basket slung across his shoulder.

do not congratulate. stop him.]

D. DO NOT PASS GO
[this whole day has really sucked, and the cool new tattoo really stings. but it doesn't take long for Felix to come to, and start causing trouble. when he sees you chained nearby, he doesn't even hesitate, regardless of your relationship with him.]

Hey.

Start a fight with me.

[solid conversation opener]

E. BREAKOUT
[if Felix can't break out, there's a good chance that you find him if you're planning on breaking IN. he's not going gentle into this good night—on the contrary, your attempt to rescue him places you as the awkward audience of Felix in a full-on brawl with one of the prison guards. he's not losing—yet—but the way the guard is wielding his club suggests that may shortly change.

help him? heckle him? why not both?]

d, i'm sorry ... looks away ...

[personal profile] unalign 2022-11-10 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ lumine doesn't have a lot of regrets, except maybe this one.

sure, it's for a good cause. but said good cause has gotten her momentarily concussed, given her a brand new throbbing arm tattoo, and landed her in jail. which was the plan in order to get the guard schedules, the escape routes, and everything else about the gallows that would make the breakout easier for everyone. she's managed to get most of the information she needs already. she just needs a way out.

and it seems like there's a guy who wants to make it easier for her. great!

she gives it a beat, debating on his words, before she picks up a rock that's managed to dislodge from the wall in the cell, throwing it hard at his head. or well, hard enough to hurt but not hard enough to maim or injure him. just enough to, you know, start a fight with him as he wanted.

... she'll apologize later, she promises.
]
boarwitness: ('Cause it just makes me want to cry)

thank u for blessing me with rock

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-12 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
[he watches her select the rock, weigh it in her hand, figuring she'll use it as a weapon in their fake fight. it's a good idea, and he approves of it—the whole thing will look more realistic with improvised weaponry.

what he doesn't expect is her hefting it up, and throwing it directly at his head. even though it's not thrown hard, it makes a very solid thunk against his forehead, newly opening the wound he'd sustained by being knocked out and brought here in the first place when he wouldn't stop struggling.

head spinning, blood trickling down his face, he makes a deep, angry sound, and lunges at lumine. the realism levels for this fight are believable, at least—the guards take notice of them immediately, starting to wander over.

through his teeth, felix hisses as he tussles.]

Fists! I meant you should punch me!
unalign: (Default)

i thought that since i don't have ingrid in nightfell, i might as well torment felix some other way

[personal profile] unalign 2022-11-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ it's lumine's quick reflexes that let her catch his hands, her own pair holding back whatever attack he has in store for her, almost toppling back if it weren't for her sense of balance. his rage is understandable since she did just throw a rock at him. but in her defense!! he wanted to start a fight. and what's the best way to start a fight, right? ]

You should've been more specific!

[ she hisses back, her eyes flickering over his shoulder to spot one of the guards walking towards her before staring back at him.

should she make this more exciting, maybe attract more attention? he did ask her to punch him ...

lumine lets go of one of his hands, gritting her teeth as she musters her entire strength to fend him off. without another word, she swings her free hand back to punch him. as requested, okay. as requested. please duck, felix.
]
boarwitness: (Gotta keep going)

he is in deep need of tormenting always tbh

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-13 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think I'd have to specify for you not to brain me!

[she catches these hands, but he still tumbles her, nearly backwards, legs working furiously to gain ground over her. with some of his own blood dripping in his eye, he looks more than a little bit manic—but he's still rather controlled, not ripping his arms away to rumble a little more seriously.

on the other hand, lumine has no such issue with harming him further, as per requested, and lets one of his hands go, rearing back with her own. throwing his free hand down to brace himself, he scrambles to pull away as he can before she closes the distance and

right hooks him one in the jaw. i decided he doesn't get to dodge this because it's funnier that way.

it takes him only a second to recover from this one, though—and now, he simply pins her to the ground, thoroughly done with giving her any more space to abuse him, but huffing with effort.]

Enough!

[the guard seems to be struggling with which key it is for the door, giving felix enough space and time to lean in close, head aching, and whisper furious instructions.]

When he comes over, I'll let you go—attack him from behind.

[because it seems like she's good at surprise attacks.]

she'll make it up to him!!!

[Once again, she should have been more cautious. If that horrific post could be believed, he has ties to both Dimitri and Sylvain, and she was living on borrowed time with all of them. Sooner or later, she would be singled out as a threat. Probably dealt with swiftly, too. Felix has a sword, and she has no doubts that he can use it.

But also...boy. Hot boy. Really hot boy. He didn't mind when he found her in the theatre on the same mission, even permitted her to rustle around in silence alongside him. It's why she allowed him to pluck the USB from her fingers (they touched hands, what a gentle brush of skin on skin!), effectively claiming the victory as his own. She wouldn't fight it, if he wants to claim the prize. As a token of gratitude.

But when he plugs the thing in, he seems...confused. Fukawa blinks.]

...It's a movie.

[Does he not? Know??? He's already using the phone pretty well, she thought this should be obvious.]
boarwitness: (It only makes me want to die)

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-12 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Explain.

[but he's not even looking at her. just 100% focused on the little screen, watching some early setup for the horror film take place.]

Is it... an old call? A recording?

[he's doing his best with what limited technological knowledge he has, and fukawa is pretty neutral in terms of people.]
janescayre: (122)

of the movies listed i've only seen It, hope he likes clowns :o)

[personal profile] janescayre 2022-11-12 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not a call. It's — look, see?

[The Warner Brothers logo had flashed on screen, only to dissipate. Then there's a grey sky seen through a frame of tree branches, heavy rain. The camera pans down to a home as further credits appear and vanish.]

It's like a story, but made with technology like this. Kind of like a p-play?

[Now it's a close up of hands, folding a sheet of paper into a boat. Music plays over the montage.]

Except more immersive. It's c-called a movie because it's a "moving" picture. Did you not know what you were looking for this whole time?
boarwitness: (No I don't need no help)

we're going to have such a good time

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-13 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
No. [he had no idea what they were looking for.

but he does fall silent, watching the scene unfold. a technologically advanced play, huh? so then everyone would be actors. but the set was so realistic...]

How do they record it from different places with these little things? [he assumes it's all done with the devices.]

[ This shouldn't be a surprising stratagem.

Honestly though, starting a prison brawl would be a good way to lure the guards here. He's fairly sure that he and Felix could probably take one down without much struggle. But then what?

He regards Felix without immediately making a swing at him. ]

Is this your plan to escape?

[ He doesn't look incredibly fussed; unfortunately, all forms of Dimitri have experience with imprisonment, though this is grimier and more surrounded by despair than his last experience. It's the latter that puts him more on-edge than before, slightly less accepting, though he's still not sure what Felix's overall scheme here is. They don't even know the way out for sure. ]
boarwitness: (I can sabotage me by myself)

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-12 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have a better one?

[it's snapped, but without much venom. surely dimitri can see the flow of how this goes. guards come in, they beat them up, take their keys, and get out. quick and simple. in and out. still, he's sensing some hesitation, and frowns.]

Don't start overthinking this. Just do what comes naturally to you, or I'll really hit you.

[so why doesn't he? instead he's just glowering, crouched like a nasty little prison gremlin, ready to fight. but dimitri has to go first, for some reason.]
paraselenes: (132)

[personal profile] paraselenes 2022-11-13 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yes, it's easy enough to follow. They've worked together on much more complicated nonsense. But why does Dimitri have to instigate this? In a slightly exasperated tone, one that he rarely allows himself to use with anyone besides his friends, he crosses his arms in response. ]

I'm not going to hit you, Felix.

[ He doesn't care if Felix punches him, just go ahead. ]

We should at least make sure we're on the same page before we do anything. It should be easy to get out of the cell—what then?
boarwitness: (No I don't need no help)

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-13 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
[felix makes an exasperated sound, but at least holds back punching while dimitri says his piece.]

We make a run for it. Whatever direction the guards are coming from, we go the opposite way. If we can get weapons from some of them along the way, even better. Then we find what they took from us, and get out.

[see? easy. this is all presented rather matter-of-factly, despite the fact that they are currently chained in a cell wearing miserable rags. none of this has extinguished felix's rebellion. but he seems to consider this plan more than enough, and cracks his knuckles, then his neck.]

Come on, boar. If you won't punch, then at least harness your beastly nature to grapple me with. It's not going to be convincing enough for someone to actually come in if we're not making a nuisance of ourselves.

[and without further ado, felix throws himself at dimitri, attempting to wrestle the other man to the ground, bound feet be damned. he's not violent about it, at least—it's more physical sparring session than an actual attempt to hurt him. mid-exertion, he mutters:]

Just don't break my spine.

[sure, he doesn't have his crest abilities at the moment, but it's not as though he's a weakling without them.]

Just clapping.

A nod. Impressed.

Good show, mate.

[what's that annoying noise...

oh! there's a guy. clapping.

that's... weird? don't clap at him. still, he turns, hands on his hips, waves lapping around his legs.]

Wasn't aware I had an audience.

[The spectator only smiles. He's actually not clapping at this sarcastically, Zagreus just never watched anyone fish anything the way Felix is doing, but he can tell that it must take some skill. ]

I don't think I know that kind of fishing. How's it going for you?

Quaint.

[ It is what Ares said as he announces himself before taking his seat next to the young man that seems to be drinking tea as though it holds the means to cure all. ]

I must say that you would probably do better with drinking something harder if you are going to drink like that, my friend. [ And the god does mean the word friend; he looks upon the man and senses something inside of him. He thinks to himself that he might be one of his -- one touched by war. ]

I don't know how much good alcohol would do for a cough and a sore throat.

[please ares his prudish fantasy catholic nature, his only indulgence is violence. he clears his throat, like he's trying to dislodge something, and makes a disgruntled noise.]

Do I know you?

One never knows, but you are right that drink does not do any healing if not due to celebration from a fight.

[ Normally, Ares would bring up Lord Dionysus and how upset he would be to hear that alcohol would not cure everything. But he has come to find so few know of his kin and to talk of them would eat at something that War does not wish to touch. ]

You might. [ He smiles. ] It is not my way to be cryptic, however, and so I shall cut straight to the point. If you know war, then you know me.

LOCKED: Augustine

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-21 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[it's not a big clearing in serene, but it's not small, either—the perfect size, one might say, for a duel. the moons are twinkling, the grass is wet with dew... and felix and augustine have been clashing, blades singing out against each other, for coming up on fifteen minutes or so.

sword fights are strenuous, so even for a seasoned warrior like felix, he's starting to flag. they've both got some good hits in on each other, though—felix with his rough, basic stygian weapon, and augustine, with his blood-borne blade, the cut on his left hand that generated it untended to.

their blades slide off each other, and felix jumps back, making distance to breath—flicking sweat out of his eyes as he does.]

Getting tired, old man?

[this is an art known as projection.

behind him, the trees rustle menacingly. probably just the wind?]
immortalrose: (Come storm the gates)

[personal profile] immortalrose 2022-11-22 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Judging from the scoff, Augustine is feeling just fine despite the nasty laceration on his hand. He really needs to study another form of magic here. While his take on Hemokinesis works wonders, it's more of a hindrance now that he's unable to regenerate as quickly as before. It's a bit of pain, literally. His right hand is completely bloody. Augustine may have cut a little too deep again. This is a bad thing since Sakura just patched him up a week or so ago. The last thing he wants is to worry the poor girl any further.]

Not yet!

[He announces with a smirk as he attempts to close the distance between them. The dhampir swoops in with his blood sword drawn. The clash of steel against magic echoes throughout the woods as the trees around them start to rustle feverishly. The loud rustling is enough to make Augustine falter in his step, especially once a tree behind Felix suddenly starts moving.]

W-what is--

[Augustine lowers his sword as he stares at whatever the hell that is approaching them. He heard stories before about walking trees but to see one in person is a bit of a treat or rather a nightmare come true. The trees right behind them start uplifting their roots from the ground, each one slowly splitting into two at the base.]

What did you do, mortal?! [He sharply turns his gaze back towards Felix with an annoyed hiss.]Is this your doing?
boarwitness: ('Cause it just makes me want to cry)

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-23 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[the blades crash together again, and felix continues to find energy despite himself. the old man with the flower shop is, surprisingly, good for a fight.

but when the woods start rustling, cracking, moving, even he is at a loss for words. the groan and snap of wood advancing on the two of them is such an insane sight to see, he doesn't find his voice until augustine is accusing him of witchcraft.]

Of course not! Do you really think I would want a bunch of trees walking in on our duel?

[but they're not just content to walk—the trees, their branches twisting together to form makeshift arms, reach up—and smash down, narrowly missing both of them.]

Come on!

[this is the second time he's been interrupted fighting, but this time he's not sticking around to get injured. he runs past augustine, away from the incoming treeline.]

a lil hunting wildcard — post-jailbreak;

[personal profile] healthkit 2022-11-22 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Joel might not be much of a talker, but the man does have ears. Once his knife and sparse makeshift weapons have been returned to him, and once he's wearing a little more than the rags they'd been forced into at the Gallows, getting rid of the brand becomes his priority. Better not to show any signs of being marked, better not to stand out from the crowd, especially one hellbent on rounding them up to spend an eternity rotting in a cell.

And so he goes hunting for a Badaliscus, whose skin should help to remove the brand in time.

He remembers seeing a couple of these fellas back out in the Shadowlands, eager to chomp into newly awakened Restless, some new nightmarish creature to add to the slew of nightmarish creatures he'd encountered even when he was alive.

Now he and Felix, banded together by their enthusiasm for hunting (or just ... not wasting resources) are momentarily camped by a swampy body of water, hidden in the tall, lush environment, and crouched behind dry grasses and a boulder covered in fuzzy moss. Joel watches a Badaliscus leisurely wading through the murky water, its sharp teeth gleaming against the reflection of the light of the day, its eyes ink-black and beady, blind to the presence of its predators only some paces away.

If all goes well, this ... shouldn't be too difficult. ]
boarwitness: (Gotta keep going)

thank you for this!!

[personal profile] boarwitness 2022-11-23 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[with their quarry so close at hand, felix exchanges a few quick hand gestures with joel—pointing at himself, then the badaliscus, making a cutting motion with his hand. in a moment, that will be his blade.

the plague monster draws closer, long snout moving from side to side—and in a smooth series of practiced movements, felix is out of the cover, leaping to the side of the pustule-covered beast. He sinks his rough sword directly through the top of its mouth, pushing it through and into the lower jaw underneath, effectively pinning its mouth shut. this, however, doesn't kill it—on the contrary, the badaliscus just begins thrashing, attempting to roll with the sword still in him.]

See if you can get its belly!

[ Well, the hand signals are easy enough for even the most inexperienced hunter to understand, and Joel's got plenty. He nods the affirmative in silent understanding before they make their move.

He watches Felix leap forward with the larger, arguably more effective weapon between the two of them, but Joel's got brute strength and a hell of a force of will, and his knife isn't half-bad in a pinch either.

With his partner doing his best to keep the beast under control, and the beast itself fighting hard against it, Joel knows its now or never. With its soft underbelly exposed through its thrashing, he bounds forward and plunges the small blade at the top of its belly, just beneath its neck, and drags it down with all his might, carving one long, clumsy line down the length of it. Swampy water gets into his mouth and soaks his clothes, and he has to pivot and twist to avoid its sharp claws as they mean to strike at him while Felix has its head in a vice. Blood and entrails spills out in waves, covering his hands and his arms in its hot slickness, and the sharp, rancid scent is almost too strong in his nose.

But it does seem to slowly lessen its flailing. ]
