You definitely don't want to handle it with bare hands. [ his pawpaws... sylvain's only got the one blacksmith tool, and they'll eventually need to part ways anyhow—so leaks will certainly require a vehicle of his own to transport the searing object around. ]
Could you try using your shirt [ (ooc chanting) strip! strip! ], and cast another spell on it so the fragment doesn't burn through the material?
[ if the mage can't render the pieces inert, perhaps he can at least fortify another object the same way he did their makeshift hammer...? ]
